My Bristol Favourites: Dave Young
Dave Young is co-founder of HUSK which has recently opened a showroom on Christmas Steps showcasing their kitchen fronts, worktops, handles and colour options.
New Zealand-born Dave launched HUSK with Ross Norgate after more than a decade running their joinery firm, Young & Norgate.
These are Dave’s top-five Bristol favourites:
Hart’s Bakery

“Whether we’re settling in for weekend at home or dashing for a train from Temple Meads, Hart’s Bakery is always my firm favourite. You can’t beat their pastries. The quality is consistently brilliant and it’s become one of those places we rely on without thinking twice; our kitchen never feels quite right without a Hart’s loaf on the counter.”
Leigh Woods

“Leigh Woods is my go-to reset button. It’s close enough to feel part of everyday life but wild enough to make you forget the city for a while. I’m often there with my dog, Griffin, on a walk or heading out for a run. The views across the Avon Gorge never get old and it’s one of those places that reminds me how lucky we are to have proper countryside right on Bristol’s doorstep.”
The Mount Without

“The Mount Without is one of those venues that keeps surprising you. It manages to feel historic and forward-thinking at the same time, and there’s always something different happening, from eclectic live music to events you wouldn’t expect to stumble across in such a striking setting. It’s a space that feels creative and welcoming without ever being predictable, which sums up a lot of what I love about Bristol’s cultural scene.”
The Hare on the Hill

“Living in Kingsdown, we’re spoiled when it comes to good cosy locals. The Green Man, Hillgrove, Highbury Vaults; you could happily rotate between them all year. But the Hare on the Hill stands out for its atmosphere and the music. There’s a genuine sense of community there; the kind of place where you pop in for one and end up staying longer than planned. It feels lively without trying too hard and always manages to put you in a good mood.”
The Kensington Arms

“A proper Sunday lunch at the Kensington Arms has become a bit of a ritual. It’s everything you want at the end of the week, good food done well, a relaxed buzz in the room and the sort of service that makes you want to linger over one more drink. It’s the kind of place you bring friends and family when they visit because you know it’ll deliver every time.”
