YoBikes temporarily removed from parts of Bristol due to theft and vandalism
Unprecedented levels of theft and vandalism have forced the temporary removal of YoBikes from areas around Bristol.
Hailed as a cycling revolution, the distinctive yellow bicycles have become a familiar sight across the city and gained a 10,000 strong community of users in just two months – but a small minority are ruining things for everyone.
Bristol24/7 broke the news that YoBike bosses were introducing anti-theft measures to combat criminal activity and the company promises the bikes will be returned to parts of the city once better security has been installed.
The aim of the cycle hire scheme was to flood the city with bikes so that they are easily available everywhere and for all intents and purposes, it has gone down a storm, with around 1,800 rides taken across Bristol each day.
Sadly, the sight of the bikes left damaged and abandoned has also become all too familiar and company bosses have expressed disappointment that the persistent cases of theft and vandalism are ruining the experience for others.
Reports the bikes are to disappear from the city streets altogether prompted a flurry of reaction on social media but YoBikes maintain parking spots that have been removed will be reactivated in the future.
However, at the time of publishing, the map of available bikes was not showing any available south of the river.
