Vandalism of liveable neighbourhood signage ‘will not be tolerated’
Avon and Somerset Police have launched a criminal investigation after bus gate signage was spray painted and a planter set on fire within the East Bristol Liveable Bristol (EBLN).
The vandalism comes amid ongoing protests over Bristol City Council’s plans to relocate a bus gate on Avonvale Road in Barton Hill.
Council bosses said the area has been targeted by “repeated acts of criminal damage” with infrastructure linked to the trial defaced on two separate occasions.
The council said it was preparing additional CCTV “to help protect highways infrastructure and public street furniture”.

The EBLN project, which covers parts of Barton Hill, Redfield and St George, is currently being run as a trial, with councillors set to vote on whether to keep it in July.
While many locals have welcomed the benefits of quieter streets, critics say it discriminates against Disabled people and plan to crowdfund legal costs.
Councillor Ed Plowden, chair of the transport and connectivity committee, said: “Vandalising road signage or other highway infrastructure is a criminal offence.
“The bus gate signage is essential for road safety and access, and damaging it puts everyone at risk, including drivers, bus passengers, cyclists and pedestrians.
“Every time a sign is vandalised, public money must be spent repairing it.
“We would urge anyone with information, or who witnessed damage taking place, to report it to the police.”

The bus gate was originally located to the west of the junction with Marsh Lane
Speaking about the recent protests, Plowden added: “The East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood trial is being shaped by community engagement and evidence.
“It is concerning that a small number of people are delaying the changes that will make it easier for local people to access the area, while maintaining quieter and safer conditions across the EBLN.
“Anyone who drives through the bus gate in error will not thank the protestors for preventing it from being made as obvious as possible.”
