Tobacco Factory Theatre
Long before he became our esteemed elected Mayor, architect George Ferguson set about transforming the remnants of this old redbrick fag-packers into one of the beacons of gentrified goodness in south Bristol. Before TF, BS3 was one of the most deprived neighbourhoods in Britain. Now you can’t move for organic yoghurt weavers and soft-top Mini Coopers. Seriously though, Ferguson’s vision catalysed a lasting cultural and economic regeneration in the area. If only he’d gone though with his plan’s for Greenbank’s Chocolate Factory too….
Anyway – the Baccy Faccy houses a decent bar (even if it can get a bit shouty when full and they don’t serve chips) on the ground floor, and an excellent thespy space upstairs. Each season the theatre produces a diverse programme of shows, workshops and events in both the main Factory building and the nearby Brewery theatre (almost just across the road, adjoining Bristol Beer Factory, another of uncle George’s laudable pet projects). The Theatre’s offering ranges from world class Shakespeare to up-and-coming comedy acts, daft family shows to regal opera, modern classics and timeless masterpieces. They also offer an extensive programme of audience events, artist training and classes for their young audience. If they did chips, it’d be perfect.
