Stephen Williams to stand in Bristol West

By Bristol24/7  Thursday May 11, 2017

He’s a glutton for punishment.

Despite his share of the vote in the 2015 General Election falling by almost 30 per cent and coming third in the Bristol West constituency where he had been an MP for almost a decade, Stephen Williams has now confirmed that he will be standing for reelection.

It comes one week after Williams finished third in the West of England metro mayor elections, although he did come second among voters in Bristol.

Molly Scott Cato of the Green Party is hotly tipped to take Bristol West this year, with Labour very nervous about losing the seat that Thangam Debbonaire won two years ago.

Since then, Debbonaire has publicly criticised her party leader Jeremy Corbyn, claiming that she was appointed shadow arts minister and then sacked again while she was receiving treatment for cancer.

Bristol University graduate Williams , who previously served as minister for communities at the Department for Communities and Local Government,  said: “This election is about electing a hard working MP who will make sure that there is an effective opposition to the Government in Westminster.

“I’m proud of my track record of standing up for Bristol’s residents in Parliament and would be proud to do so again.”
