Spoof campaign to save Bristol cenotaph
Hundreds of people on Facebook have been duped into supporting a spoof campaign to prevent Bristol’s Cenotaph being removed from the centre and relocated to Stokes Croft.
Shared more than 700 times, a post on the Facebook page Save Bristol Cenotaph claims that the city council used the distraction of the recent elections to hide the news that the Cenotaph would be moved to the corner of City Road.
An outraged council insider is quoted as saying: “It was decided that the existing site is a very busy area all year round and, since the Cenotaph is only popular for one or two days each year, it is little more than an obstruction which would be better served by celebrating the ethnic diversity of Bristol.”
is needed now More than ever
Plans for the current Cenotaph site allegedly include a weekly ‘cultural market’ and regular education and music workshops.
An online petition against this “travesty” has been claimed to have been set up, but so far there is no sign of it online.

Indignation about the plans has still spread, however, with many Facebook commenters angry, furious and downright dismayed.
Commenting on one photographs of the Cenotaph surrounded by fencing, Peter Devonald wrote: “I do not like the idea of this .why did are parent and grandparents give and sacrifice so much only to have idiots at council house.want to move this, were are they going to parade on Poppy Day.bristol elected councillors should not be so complacent.should start to serve the people that voted them in.it is definitely UKIP for me next time.had enough of self righteous prats.”
Lorraine Portingale wrote: “Outrageous. Shows what the council think of our war dead. They fought for YOU!!!!!!!!”
Even new mayor Marvin Rees has been implicated in the dastardly ruse, with the creator of the page writing: “Here we go – a lefty Mayor in power. Does anyone want to guess what side of the fence this appeaser will be on when it comes to our Cenotaph? We’ll be surprised if he doesn’t want to relocate it to Morrisons carpark at Cribbs Causeway.”
In actual fact, as these plans for the current redevelopment of the centre show, the Cenotaph is going precisely nowhere:
