Protest to be held against Trump adminstration’s attempts to ‘destabilise democracy’
A Bristol-based grassroots group is organising a “peaceful” demonstration in the city on Saturday, as part of a global day of protest against Donald Trump and his administration’s attempts to “dismantle the US federal government and destabilise democracy” worldwide.
Campaigners from Americans for Action Bristol and Indivisible UK’s South West branch will gather on Castle Park from 2pm to coordinate with the UK and Europe-wide “No Tyrants” protest, which is being held in solidarity with over 2,000 cities in the US joining the “No Thrones. No Crowns. No Kings” protest.
The demonstrations are an extension of similar protests held in June, which saw all 50 US states unite for what the group has called the “largest single-day protest” against Trump’s “authoritarianism”.
On Saturday afternoon, people in Bristol will have the chance to write a message for the US president, which will then be collected, digitised and sent to the White House as part of the #HumanWrite campaign.
One of the organisers, Meghan Watson, criticised Trump and his administration’s actions, which she said have adversely affected the US healthcare system, the lives of immigrants and more.
She said: “Trump has gutted healthcare for everyday Americans, ‘disappeared’ immigrants who were kidnapped and sent to a concentration camp, allowed children to be taken from their homes in the middle of the night and zip-tied – I could go on.
“As a mother, as an American, and as a human being, I cannot stand by and watch him destroy the things that truly make America great: our humanity, our diversity, our capacity to love our neighbours. We overthrew a king once before, and we will do it again.”
