Old Market ‘gap’ almost completed

By Martin Booth  Monday Jul 8, 2024

Work has almost finished on completing the Old Market ‘gap’ between Castle Park and the Old Market roundabout.

It is now possible to both walk and cycle between Castle Street and the roundabout on newly created segregated paths through a a reconfigured road junction.

Work started on the £1.2m scheme in September and was funded by WECA through a grant from the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund.

The work includes a new segregated cycle route on Tower Hill past Central Health Clinic towards Passage Street and Narrow Plain.

The former left turn for motor vehicles from Castle Street onto Lower Castle Street has also now changed to a right turn only onto Tower Hill.

The work has closed the infamous gap between Castle Park and the Old Market roundabout

On announcing the work in 2023, a news release from Bristol City Council said that “it is hoped cyclists will use this new route in favour of the Temple Way underpass as it is much quieter and cyclists and pedestrians will no longer need to share space, reducing conflict and potential accidents”.

Former cabinet for transport, Don Alexander, said that it was a “key priority” for the former Labour administration “to continue to make our roads safer and more accessible for all, to encourage more people to travel actively and improve their health while helping us to cut congestion and air pollution in the city”.

Work was meant to finish in April but has ben slightly delayed
