New structures dedicated to local heroes appear on cycle path

By Rachel Sutherland  Wednesday Mar 29, 2023

Two steel structures dedicated to local heroes have popped up on a cycle path in the north west of Bristol.

One is dedicated to Mark Pepper, one of the founders of charity, Ambition Lawrence Weston, who was voted for by his community.

Mark has lived in Lawrence Weston his whole life and has dedicated three decades to improving the local area individually and with his grassroots charity.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

The other structure, erected on Route 41 of the National Cycle Network, is that of an NHS nurse – an ode to all of the devoted NHS staff across the UK.

Sustrans is the charity behind the two ‘Portrait Benches’ which appeared in Lawrence Weston on Wednesday and are set to be fully constructed by Thursday.

Sustrans’ Portrait Benches project celebrates local heroes, who have been nominated by their communities, by immortalising them as life-sized steel figures.

The Lawrence Weston heroes were nominated as part of the latest iteration of the project and are just two of hundreds of existing structures across the UK on the National Cycle Network.
