New St George’s flag raised in Castle Park
With the sun making its first appearance of the spring this week, Castle Park has already begun to fill with lunchtime dwellers.
Some of who may notice the newly erected St George’s flag above St Peter’s Church.
The new flag was donated by the Mayor after local resident Gary Horne; who works in the city centre, and walks past the church every day, commented on the state of the old “threadbare” flag after meeting him at an award ceremony.
Gary says of the new flag: “It looks fantastic up there, especially on a nice sunny day, and I think it really makes the park.”

St Peter’s is believed to be the oldest church in Bristol, with estimates dating the building back to around the 1400s.
The majority of St Peter’s Church, along with most of the surrounding buildings, was destroyed during the blitz in 1940. The shell remains in Castle Park as a reminder and memorial to the city’s wartime casualties.
The Mayor says: “On St George’s Day on April 23rd, I hope that everyone using Castle Park will think of the bustling city streets that used to occupy the area, and the many Bristolians who tragically died in the blitz, now listed on the church wall.”
