New nose job needed for Bristol’s famous ‘house that smells’

By Martin Booth  Monday May 1, 2023

Bristol’s famous ‘house that smells’ is in need of a nose job.

The owner of the house with a 12ft-high nose on one side has started a crowdfunder to raise the money needed for a new protuberance.

Birds have been taking sticks from the enormous olfactory edifice for their nests over recent years, with the nose currently in a sorry state.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

First made from chicken wire and papier-mâché, and then from willow, the third iteration of the sustainable schnozzle will be made by a Zimbabwean sculptor using local bamboo.

Artist Kennedy Chinyere says that the bamboo version will be stronger than willow and has already been preparing his materials, drawing his designs and is hoping to start work soon.

Jane Tarr, the owner of the house on Roslyn Road in Redland, needs to raise £2,500 for the new nose.

Jane said: “If you feel that the nose should be renovated with a new bamboo nose, created for the benefit of local Bristolians then please donate to this fundraising campaign and know that you have been a part of the third nose job and continuation of this Bristol icon.”
