Nathan Matthews remanded in custody

By Martin Booth  Thursday Mar 5, 2015

Nathan Matthews, the stepbrother of St George teenager Becky Watts, appeared in Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning charged with her murder.

Matthews, 28, of Cotton Mill Lane in Barton Hill, made a brief appearance in court 1 to answer the charges against him. Wearing a blue t-shirt, he spoke only to confirm his name, age and date of birth.

After he was remanded in custody by Judge Lynne Matthews before appearing at Bristol Crown Court on Friday, his girlfriend Shauna Hoare, 21, of the same address, also appeared charged with perverting the course of justice.

She will appear before the crown court for a preliminary hearing on April 2. There was no application for bail.

As a prison van left the rear of the magistrates’ court on Whitson Street, one woman banged on its side, shouting obscenities at the occupants.

Four other men and a woman, all in their 20s, are still being questioned on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Outside Becky’s home on Crown Hill, the number of floral tributes continue to grow. A fund set up to pay for her funeral has now raised more than £7,000.
