Marvin vs Jacinda

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Feb 2, 2021

Marvin Rees has borrowed an idea from New Zealand as time ticks down to election day.

The Bristol mayor’s One Week, One Minute challenge looks to have been inspired by Kiwi prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, who in 2018 listed everything her administration had done in their first 100 days in government.

Rees said that in 60 seconds each week, “I’ll share some of what we’ve done, working with Bristol, to deliver for Bristol”.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

But which politician did it better?

Here is the original by Ardern:

And here is Rees:

Commenting on the Facebook video, Holly Maurice said: “It’s great to hear about some of the good things you’ve been doing and achieved since you became mayor! Great job, keep it up”

Chandra Moon said: “Well done good to hear some positive stuff.”

Tim Burchell wrote: “So, where is our world class arena then Marvin?”

And under the same video on Twitter, @lisahartrey11 wrote: “Hang on a minute! Our local library Filwood broadway in knowle west….closed! The swimming pool also closed! Trees all taken down for new builds…affordable housing that no one in the local community can afford. Hengrove park…also closed”

Bristol’s delayed mayoral elections are due to take place on May 6, with Rees up against the Green Party’s Sandy Hore-Ruthven, Lib Dem Dr Caroline Gooch and Tory Alastair Watson.
