Litter hero receives Lord Mayor’s medal

By Mary Milton  Monday Dec 9, 2024

An unsung community hero has recently received the Lord Mayor’s medal for his efforts to keep streets clean and tidy.

Zac Jones takes part in litter-picking all over the city but is most often seen out and about in Sea Mills where he lives. He’s always around on bin day and helps some of the older people with their rubbish and recycling.

Zac says he has been litter-picking for “donkey’s ages – 10 or 15 years”.

“No one else was doing it and I care about wildlife,” he adds.

Zac received his medal from the Lord Mayor, councillor Andrew Varney, at a ceremony held at the Lord Mayor’s mansion.

He says “receiving the medal was a nice big surprise” although he doesn’t do litter-picking “for things like this”.

Around 12 people are awarded the Lord Mayor’s medal every year for outstanding voluntary service to the community. Anyone can nominate someone they think deserves recognition.
