‘Library of Things’ hopes to open new site in south Bristol

By Martin Booth  Thursday Feb 16, 2023

At the Library of Things, you can borrow everything from gardening equipment, to DIY tools to camping stuff.

Library of Things is a social enterprise that helps people save money and reduce waste by affordably renting out useful items, and by helping neighbours share practical skills.

There are more than 500 items to borrow at the eco-conscious not for profit organisation in Kingswood, which is hoping to open a new branch bringing their circular economy model to south Bristol.

The volunteer team behind Share Bristol are hoping to open their second site on East Street in Bedminster, and are looking for local people to help make it a reality.

Share Bristol volunteer Anna Perry said: “Most people have loads of things that they only use a few times a year, sitting around cluttering up their homes.

“By donating something to the library, you’re getting it out of the house, but can still borrow it whenever you want.”

Annual membership of Bristol’s first Library of Things will include a cheaper rate for those on low incomes, with everything free to borrow after the membership fee is paid.

The team say that one of their guiding principles is that a library of things “should help people get their hands on the things they need, regardless of income”.

The library on East Street will also be large enough for people to learn how to use the items on offer at insides inside the space.
