Keyworkers treated to balloon flights to say thank you

By Martin Booth  Monday Sep 7, 2020

Almost 40 balloons took off from Ashton Court on Sunday morning with some very important guests on board.

The mass ascent was organised by balloon pilots to say thank you to key workers and carers for their work during the coronavirus pandemic.

One of the pilots, Derek Maltby, said: “We are so grateful to those people who have continued to work for us all in the region during the lockdown and with the gifts, skills and assets we have, felt we could show our thanks in a tangible way.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

“A balloon flight is on a bucket list wish for many people so this could be a special treat for someone who has worked hard over the past months to support their community.”

Unsung heroes and key workers from Bristol and across the South West were nominated by colleagues, friends and family members.

As well as NHS staff, these included postal workers, shopkeepers and refuse collectors, with much of Bristol waking up on Sunday morning to the balloons flying overhead.
