Horfield by-election candidates confirmed

By Martin Booth  Monday Jun 10, 2024

Five candidates will contest a by-election in Horfield on the same day as the general election.

The by-election on July 4 is taking place after Deborah Vittori, one of the victorious Labour candidates in May’s local elections, was disqualified due to being a teacher employed by Bristol City Council.

Teachers are allowed to become councillors but not at local authorities in which they hold paid positions in a council-run school.

The candidates in the Horfield by-election are:

  • Carole Johnson – Labour
  • Roxanne Lock – Lib Dems
  • Anna Meares – Green
  • Joan Molins – TUSC
  • Sharon Scott – Conservative

Horfield is a ward represented by two councillors, with Bristol’s Labour group leader Tom Renhard holding the other seat.

On May 2, Renhard received 1,495 votes and Vittori 1,485, with Meares in second place for the Green Party with 903 votes.

Horfield ward is within Bristol North West constituency, where incumbent MP Darren Jones is favourite to retain his parliamentary seat.
