Peter Hargreaves bankrolling Brexit campaign
Bristol’s richest man Peter Hargreaves has been revealed as the biggest funder of the Brexit campaign.
The billionaire co-founder of stockbrokers Hargreaves Lansdown, whose head offices are on Anchor Road, has given £3.2m to the Leave camp.
“It would be the biggest stimulus to get our butts in gear that we have ever had,” Hargreaves told the Guardian.
“It will be like Dunkirk again. We will get out there and we will become incredibly successful because we will be insecure again. And insecurity is fantastic.”
The news of Hargreaves’ involvement comes as his Hargreaves Lansdown co-founder Steve Lansdown was named in the Panama Papers as one of only two shareholders of Sustainable Technology Investments Limited (STIG).
Lansdown, who now lives in Guernsey, is the only beneficiary of the company. Another Guernsey-based company co-owned by Lansdown, Pula Ltd, is named as the intermediary.
The Bristol Cable report that a related company, Pula Sport Ltd, owns Bristol City Holdings Ltd, Bristol Rugby Club and Bristol Flyers. Pula Ltd controls Pula Sport Ltd.
In a statement, the directors of STIG said: “Stephen Lansdown and Gordon Power formed Sustainable Technology Investments (Guernsey) Limited (‘STIG’) in 2009 as a vehicle through which to make their private equity investments.
“The use of a British Virgin Islands company for this administrative purpose is not unusual and the financial statements of the company are made available to the authorities.”
