Green Party leader joins residents protest
Green Party leader Natalie Bennett (pictured above, back row, fifth from left) joined a group of residents and campaigners wanting a council-owned building in the harbourside returned to its original purpose of community use.
The Pavilion – above Spitfire restaurant – was described by the architect of the original harbourside scheme as an “urban village hall” and was developed as a requirement of the area’s masterplan.

is needed now More than ever
A petition is asking Bristol City Council to allow the Pavilion to be used for community events, saying that a hire rate of £200 for an evening “is clearly far beyond the ability of any typical community group”.
The petition adds: “As if that wasn’t enough, the space is always booked up months in advance, usually by the council itself (for internal/training purposes, it seems), and sometimes by corporate users who obviously like the easy central location.
“There really isn’t a way for the actual intended users – the local residents and local community groups – to get a look in to hire this venue, and this really isn’t acceptable.”
