Great War play to be performed at university

By Chris Brown  Monday Sep 29, 2014

Bristol University’s Wills Memorial Building will swap academia for theatre next week when it plays host to a production of one of the finest plays written about the Great War.

The Conquering Hero by Allan Monkhouse was written in 1923 and examines the dilemma of an upper class writer and pacifist who is persuaded – or bullied – into enlisting by his military family. His body survives but his mind is shattered by the experience.

Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory (SATTF) and the University of Bristol are co-producing the play, and plan it to be the first of a series of collaborations.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

The production includes members of the Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory company – Julia Hills, Roland Oliver, Saskia Portway, Paul Currier, Piers Wehner, David Collins and Jack Bannell. It will be directed in-the-round by SATTF artistic director Andrew Hilton in the Edwardian splendour of the Reception Room in the Wills Memorial Building.

A post-show talk and discussion will take place after the final performance on Sunday, October 12 chaired by Andrew Kelly, director of the Bristol Festival of Ideas.
