Fire breaks out in Stoke Park

By Maddie Clarke-Newell  Friday Aug 12, 2022

A fire broke out on Stoke Park Estate on Thursday after a barbecue was left unattended.

The blaze erupted at around 3pm in the afternoon, when firefighters from Temple and Kingswood stations were called to the incident in Stapleton.

The flames were visible from the M32 and the flames damaged a significant part of the land.

Emergency services said it was caused by a disposable barbecue, the owner of which reportedly ran away when the grass began setting a light.

Highs of 36 degrees are expected this weekend which has triggered Avon Fire and Rescue service advise against using disposal barbecues over the weekend.

A spokesperson said: “Crews from Temple and Kingswood were called to reports of a grass fire at 16:25. On arrival, crews found a large grass fire affecting an area of approximately 150 metres by 100 metres.

“Using two high pressure hose reels and grass beaters, crews were able to extinguish the fire. The cause of the blaze was determined to have been an unattended barbecue.”

With Bristol Balloon fiesta taking place across the weekend, organisers have urged visitors to not bring barbecues with them to Ashton court estate.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather alert from Thursday to Sunday.
