Emotipod podcast promises something ‘nourishingly arty’

By Martin Booth  Monday Jun 7, 2021

Frances Butt has worked in film and TV production, screen composition, songwriting, playwriting and performing.

Now an Alexander technique teacher, the Clifton resident has also recently started a podcast “banging the gong for the arts”.

“Art isn’t just your Picasso, your Shakespeare and your Grand Operal,” says Frances.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

“Every song on the radio, every birthday card, shoe, mug, table, tattoo. We’re surrounded by art all the time. It’s as fundamentally important as green veg and exercise.”

Frances’ fortnightly Emotipod podcast has so far featured guests including actor Greta Scacchi, Nia dance teacher Helen Drane, and crime writer and critic Peter Guttridge.

Echo & the Bunnymen guitarist Will Sergeant will feature in the next episode released on June 13.

Other guests lined up for future podcasts will be talking about painting, burlesque, poetry, horror movies, opera, gift wrapping, puppetry and musicals.

“We need art,” says Frances. “We need to create and to receive other people’s creations, for social cohesion, for joy, release, escape. So many reasons…

“In November 2020, I (like a billion other people, so why the heck not) thought of starting a fortnightly podcast, banging the gong for the arts by talking to artists and creatives about their areas of expertise and sharing our conversations.

“I started in January, asking a few people I know, and it took off. The name’s a bit daft but it makes it easy to find: Emotipod: Emotions in the Arts…

“I hope the series might inspire folks to notice and appreciate the art all around them a bit more, and maybe even put the damn phone down for a little while and do something nourishingly arty.”
