Darren Jones to host House of Commons podcast
As well as being the MP for Bristol North West, Darren Jones is the chair of the influential Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy Committee at the House of Commons.
The cross-party committee scrutinises the policy, spending and administration of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy and public bodies including energy regulator Ofgem.
Jones receives £16,865 extra per year for this work on top of his £84,144 annual MP’s salary.
The Southmead-born politician, who grew up in Lawrence Weston, has now also become the host of a podcast which showcases the work of the House of Commons select committees.
The Committee Corridor, which is returning for its second season on Thursday, “demonstrates the day-to-day work done by cross-party committees and their members to help steer policy and decision-making in the interests of the people of the UK”.
The latest six-episode series promises to consider “the causes, consequences and potential remedies of an issue that is touching every corner of the UK right now – the cost of living crisis”.
Jones is taking over presenting taking over podcast presenting duties from security minister Tom Tugendhat, who ran in the most recent Conservative Party leadership election, later supporting Liz Truss.
Jones said: “The cost of living crisis is affecting millions of people, businesses and public services across the country. Why are we in a cost of living crisis and what can be done about it?
“Committee Corridor gives a window into the discussions we have in our select committees in Parliament, and the recommendations we make to Government to improve policy making.”
In his first episode as presenter, Jones interviews Resolution Foundation think tank CEO, Torsten Bell, and is joined by Caroline Nokes, chair of the Women & Equalities Committee, and Sir Stephen Timms, chair of the Work & Pensions Committee.
