Further details revealed of Arena Island plans with no arena
The group behind the proposed city centre Bristol Arena called the release of details for ambitious plans on Temple Island, but ones that include no arena, as “undermining” the city council’s own plans.
Property investor Legal & General unveiled designs by Zaha Hadid Architects for a huge housing development on the site long earmarked for the city’s new arena.
The scheme would see 550 homes, a 345-room hotel, a large-capacity conference centre and two office blocks built on the two-hectare site.
Legal & General say that it wants to “create a vibrant new quarter of the city with a focus on social inclusion through affordable housing, training and employment”.
A newly released artist’s impression of the development shows tree-lined roads, shared space and outside seating areas on street level.
The sunny scene – surprisingly with no hot air balloon in sight – is overlooked by a lot of glass.
Bristol mayor Marvin Rees said: “I welcome Legal & General sharing this vision for the site for the city…
“L&G’s vision for social inclusion and a greener use of the space is an interesting aspect which will need consideration.”
Rees is expected to make his decision on the location of the arena – a choice between Temple Island and the Brabazon Hangars owned by YTL at the former Filton Airfield – at a cabinet meeting on September 4.
The day before, an extraordinary full council meeting has been called at City Hall by a cross-party group of councillors, who have urged Rees to use the result of a vote as the basis for his decision.
