Commemorative 50p coin celebrates 30th anniversary of Wallace and Gromit

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Oct 29, 2019

Bristol’s most famous duo made their name as plasticine figures and will now be commemorated in sterling silver.

Not due to be released into general circulation, the coin featuring Wallace and Gromit has been designed by the team at Aardman in collaboration with the Royal Mint to mark the duo’s 30th anniversary.

The coin features a portrait of the pair, bordered by an inscription of Wallace’s famous catchphrase in Latin: “caseus praestans” – cracking cheese.

The initials of Wallace and Gromit’s creator Nick Park can be seen above Gromit’s shoulder on the design.

He said: “When A Grand Day Out was first screened 30 years ago, we never expected for Wallace and Gromit to become such a long-standing, well-loved series around the world.

“It’s been an honour to work with The Royal Mint to bring the pair to life in a new way, and everyone at Aardman is so excited to see the pair on a coin.”

Special editions of the Wallace and Gromit coin cost from £10 to £980 for a limited edition gold proof struck in 22 carat gold.

In 2018, the Royal Mint released 26 new 10p coins tracing the A-Z of Britishness with coin designs celebrating Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North, queuing, zebra crossings, James Bond, Stonehenge and the World Wide Web.

The Royal Mint has previously collaborated with Aardman by designing sculptures for the Gromit Unleashed and Shaun in the City trails.
