Cat and mouse game between sound systems and police on 420 Day
Music echoed off the surrounding Brunel Way flyover from a sound system set up close to Ashton Avenue Bridge on Monday afternoon.
But just minutes after DJs in the Riot Noise truck started playing, they abruptly stopped due to the arrival of half a dozen police officers.
Avon & Somerset Constabulary had promised “an increased and highly-visible policing presence in and around Bristol city centre” on 420 Day, an annual celebration of cannabis culture which in recent years has attracted hundreds of people and multiple sound systems to Castle Park.
Castle Park was still packed on Monday but there was a noticeable lack of sound systems with barriers set up at many entrances to the park to prevent vehicles from entering.
So the sound systems attempted to go elsewhere including Riverside Park in St Jude’s.
Police officers issued dispersal notices to several sound system organisers with the threat of arrest a seemingly suitable deterrent.

Inspector John Shaddick said: “Our approach is focused on upholding the law, reducing anti-social behaviour and keeping our public spaces safe and a respectful space for everyone.
“We work closely with our partners to support this work.
“We cannot – and will not – tolerate behaviour that causes significant disrupts the lives of residents or impacts on visitors who have every right to peacefully enjoy these spaces.
“Our neighbourhood team, supported by specialist officers, will be carrying out extra patrols in and around the city centre to ensure that happens.”
