Bristol scientist receives medal for 50-year service

By Jack Wilkinson  Thursday Jun 15, 2017

Biomedical scientist Stephen Clarke, a resident of Westbury-on-Trym, has received a medal from the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) in recognition of his “50 years of dedicated service and membership”.

In the UK, pathologists play a role in over 70% of diagnoses in the NHS. Biomedical scientists like Stephen, who worked at Southmead Hospital until his retirement in 2007, diagnose disease and analyse as many as 150 million fluid and tissue samples each year.

Having joined the IBMS in 1966, Stephen became a Fellow in 1971 and a Chartered Scientist in 2004. As well as his work at Southmead, Stephen lectured at Bristol Polytechnic, and was a member of the institute’s specialist advisory panel in clinical chemistry.

Dr David Petts, chairman of the History Committee said: “Stephen has given long service both to the institute and the profession of biomedical science as a whole.  This medal is a token of recognition of his valuable contribution to science, education and the history of biomedical science.”

On recieving the medal, Stephen said: ““I was very pleased to receive this award. It’s been a very enjoyable career I’ve had, and I’ve been very lucky. I have worked with some wonderful people.”
