Armed police use flash grenades to bring end to siege at petrol station

By Martin Booth  Thursday Sep 9, 2021

Armed police officers surrounded the shop of a petrol station before using flash grenades to enter the building.

Around ten loud flashbangs went off before two officers could be seen entering the front door of the Morrisons Daily shop at the Esso petrol station on Hengrove Way.

A man armed with a knife had been inside the shop, with a man dressed all in black led away by police soon before 10am. One of the officers was still carrying a gun as he escorted the man out of the building.

Police were called at 7.36am and on the scene by 7.41am. Earlier in the morning, one person had been taken to hospital with injuries believed not to be life-threatening.

Staff members were reported to be uninjured and in contact with police from a safe room inside the shop.

In the pouring rain, the man detained by officers was searched in front of a police van on the forecourt of the petrol station before being led away.

At 10.25am, Avon & Somerset police tweeted: “We have detained a man in connection with an incident at a petrol station on Hengrove Way this morning. Investigations at the scene continue.”
