Anti-monarchy conference in Stokes Croft
An anti-monarchy national conference will be held in Stokes Croft this year.
Republic is set to hold the event in Hamilton House, above The Canteen, on July 11 ahead of the launch of a new campaign to abolish the Duchy of Cornwall.
It will be a homecoming for the campaign group’s cheif exectutive, Graham Smith, who grew up in Bristol.
“Having grown up in Bristol I’m delighted to be heading back to the city for our annual conference,” he said.
“Republic has been gaining hundreds of new members recently, this campaign is only growing louder and stronger.”

He added: “The Duchy of Cornwall has a strong presence in the Westcountry and is a vehicle for Prince Charles’s influence and lobbying.
“We believe it needs to be abolished and its land and assets handed to the nation.”
“In Bristol we’ll be announcing a new campaign aimed at raising awareness of the Duchy and why it needs to go.”
Deputy leader of the Green Party in England, Shahrar Ali, will speak at the conference alongside Spectator columnist Tanya Gold.
The conference will also look at royal expenses.
“I’m delighted to have Shahrar Ali as a guest speaker,” Smith said. “The Greens have a clear commitment to ending the monarchy’s constitutional role and Republic is keen to build alliances across all political parties so we can secure future political support.”
Republic’s annual conference is on Saturday, July 11 at 11-5pm at Hamilton House, with tickets available from www.republic.org.uk/2015AnnualConference.
