Amphitheatre gigs going ahead despite red extreme heat warning
A series of gigs at the Lloyds Amphitheatre are still due to take place on Wednesday and Thursday despite record-breaking temperatures.
Music fans with tickets for Super Furry Animals on Wednesday and the Streets on Thursday have contacted Bristol24/7 with a number of concerns.
Bristol Sounds organisers are pressing ahead with the shows but are advising ticket holders “to take precautions due to the weather warning in place”.
GWR are currently running an amended service and advise passengers of “essential travel only” on Wednesday and Thursday.
One ticket holder for Super Furry Animals, who are being supported by Bristol duo Getdown Services and Welsh singer-songwriter Gwenno, said her concerns include the venue next to the docks being entirely open to the elements with no natural shade.
She added: “Festival leaders are telling people to ‘take precautions’ and bring reusable bottles, but attendees feel this is inadequate under a ‘danger to life’ red alert.”
Fans have also taken to Bristol Sounds’ Instagram with one writing: “39C, no shade, large crowds and alcohol seems like a recipe for disaster. Seems entirely irresponsible.”
“I get that it’s annoying and lots of effort has gone into the events but you are saying crew and crowd safety is your top priority. Is it?”

A Bristol Sounds spokesperson said: “We understand why people are concerned about the hot weather forecast and want to reassure ticket holders that attendee safety is our top priority.
“We’ve been working closely with Bristol City Council, Avon & Somerset Police, and our on-site medical and welfare teams, and together we are confident in the plans and additional measures we have in place for the event to go ahead safely.
“We are encouraging everyone attending to prepare for the conditions by staying hydrated, applying sunscreen regularly and bringing a hat for sun protection.
“Guests are welcome to bring an empty reusable water bottle or sealed water bottles, which can be refilled free of charge at our water stations.
“Given the forecast temperatures, we will also allow attendees to bring small umbrellas for personal sun shade.
“We have introduced a number of additional measures for attendees, including free water refill points, additional water and soft drink provision, shaded rest and welfare areas, enhanced medical and welfare staffing, and drinking water distribution by security teams at key locations, including queues and the front of the stage.
“While conditions are expected to be hot, much of the amphitheatre moves into shade not long after doors open as the sun drops behind the surrounding buildings, helping to reduce prolonged exposure during the evening.
“Our welfare and medical teams will be present throughout the concert and anyone feeling unwell should speak to a member of staff, who will be able to help.
“We also encourage attendees to check travel information before setting out and allow additional time for their journey where necessary.
“We look forward to seeing everyone at the Super Furry Animals tonight.”
