Aardman Animations co-founder appointed patron of We The Curious
A celebrated figure in Bristol’s creative sector has been appointed the first-ever patron of We The Curious.
The Millennium Square-based science centre and educational charity has named David Sproxton, co-founder of Aardman Animations, to the new role.
Announced during trustees’ week, Sproxton will serve as a public ambassador to promote the charity’s mission of inspiring curiosity and inclusion through science, while also offering guidance to its board.
He brings a wealth of experience in the creative sector and sustainability to the role, as We The Curious celebrates its quarter century legacy.

Sproxton said: “I’m delighted to be asked to be a patron for We The Curious as I am passionate about giving young people experiences that may spark a life-long interest.
“I was particularly fascinated and influenced by a theatre-lightning exhibit in the London Science Museum when I was a child – those experiences can be so influential.
“I’ve always been interested in how things work and how science and imagination can be brought together to make amazing things, so I’m pleased to play a part in encouraging those experiences to happen.”
A long-time supporter and former trustee, Sproxton has been a key figure in Bristol’s cultural scene for more than 50 years, founding CYCLEBAG (now Walk Wheel Cycle Trust) and serving on the boards of Bristol Old Vic and co-founding the Encounters Film Festival, one of Europe’s leading short film and animation events.
Chief executive Donna Speed said the appointment was especially meaningful as the organisation marks a major milestone.
She added: “David has been part of our story for 20 years, from inspiring collaborations like Animate It! to his thoughtful leadership as chair of our purpose committee during his time as a trustee.
“He brings such creativity, curiosity and kindness, and it feels really meaningful to have someone who knows us so well and champions our work helping shape our future.”

Sproxton began making animated films with Peter Lord while at Woking Grammar School for Boys in Surrey, later settling in Bristol to found Aardman Animations back in 1976, which went on to win four Academy Awards.
