Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2018, day 14: TREE AID
Bristol-based charity TREE AID was founded over 30 years ago in response to the famine in Ethiopia. After initial emergency relief efforts ceased, the team knew it was going to be vital to provide a long-term solution for residents.
Their vision is to build thriving and sustainable communities across the drylands of Africa by unlocking the potential of trees to provide nutrition, generate income, protect the environment and ultimately reduce the vulnerability of communities to drought and famine.
With a programme that focusses on areas with some of the toughest conditions on the planet, such as Burkina Faso, Ghana and isolated areas of Ethiopia, and areas where many people live in extreme poverty, their work is essential in supporting these communities.
is needed now More than ever
The power of trees is impressive. Trees generate nutritious and diverse produce all year round which, in a place where one child dies of hunger every two minutes, provides vital food for communities where it is in short supply. Not only do trees provide food but they also provide a source of income, and selling produce generates money to help communities pay for healthcare and education.
Trees also enrich the environment by improving soil quality to facilitate better harvests, reduce soil loss due to wind or flooding, increase biodiversity and help to keep the land fertile for many generations to come. And if that wasn’t enough reasons to plant more trees, some trees can also be used to produce natural medicines as well as providing shade and shelter.
Since starting up, the charity has already planted over 15 millions trees and regenerated many more. Their current strategy aims to grow over 8 million trees, which would help lift 2.5 million people out of poverty and restore over 250,00 hectares of degraded land by 2022.
