Pharmacy reopens within new ‘European-style’ building
A pharmacy in south Bristol has reopened after it was abruptly forced to close earlier this year.
Bedminster Pharmacy was forced to close its doors when the owner of its previous premises decided to redevelop the land.
Its new site on East Street, located around the corner from its former home, presented a unique challenge, having been practically derelict and home to a “very lively pigeon nest” according to pharmacist Ade Williams.
is needed now More than ever
Despite the previous location having only closed on Saturday afternoon, it was straight into business as usual on Monday morning, with customers queuing up to get their prescriptions.
In order to transport all the stock to the new building, the pharmacy enlisted the help of local volunteers as well as staff members.
Williams admits that it was “daunting” to make such a big move in such a short space of time, and says that it would not have been possible without the help of the local community.

Bedminster Pharmacy partnered with Bedminster-based architecture practice 310studio, which has also worked with the National Gallery and Wellcome Collection, to make a design that Williams calls “homely and welcoming” for its customers.
The design breaks from traditional British pharmacies in having calm green paint, soft lighting, and lots of wood panelling to create a gentle ambience, inspired by pharmacies in other parts of Europe.

The pharmacy also has three consulting rooms, each with a different coloured ceiling, to diagnose more people.
Highlighting the increasing importance of pharmacies for healthcare in the UK, Williams believes that the new practice will “relay credibility” to other parts of the NHS about local pharmacies.
