Incoming immersive installation dedicated to Bristol’s seas and stars

By Erina Mannan  Tuesday Jul 9, 2024

Space Shanty strives to be a creative and futuristic exploration of how sailors used the night sky to voyage across the seas.

Hosted by Yuup, the installation coming to the M Shed is aimed at younger children but promises to entertain and education visitors of all ages.

Visitors can expect to participate in interactive activities such as star gazing, navigating a virtual ship and creating their own musical shanties. Narrating is ‘Bemmie the Ratronaut’, “Bristol’s first space rat”.

The point of Bemmie is to be a child-friendly, whimsical introduction to the world of space and sea shanties.

Megan Broadmeadow, the lead artist behind Space Shanty who has collaborated with various museums including Aerospace Bristol,  described the project as a “testament to Bristol’s enduring spirit of exploration and creativity.”

“Come along and experience a retelling of Bristol’s past that you’ve never seen before!”

Head of commercial and operations for Bristol culture, Michael Dunn added: “We’re very excited to host Space Shanty this summer.

“The event promises to be a great day out for everyone to enjoy, inviting visitors to rediscover our city through a cosmic lens.”

Space Shanty takes place at M Shed from July 18 to September 1. Tickets can be purchased via Yuup. For more information, visit www.yuup.co/SpaceShanty
