New greengrocer and deli opening in Bedminster

By Bristol24/7  Wednesday Nov 1, 2017

A new greengrocer and deli opening next year on North Street aims to source nearly all its produce from just 15 miles away from Bristol city centre.

Hugo’s owner Hugo Sapsed is now crowdfunding to help him create his dream shop:

Hugo (pictured top) – whose first job as a 13-year-old was working at Reg the Veg in Clifton Village on Saturday mornings and summer holidays – has recently returned to his home town of Bristol after six years living in London working in fashion.

“I’ve always been passionate about food,” Hugo told Bristol24/7.

“I decided to open a the shop as had had enough of living in London. I’d always wanted to open a greengrocer from a young age and had a light bulb moment walking through Leigh Woods and decided why not and try and go for it.

“I’ve always loved Bristol and felt was the right time to move back, there’s such a buzz and I wanted to be part of it.

“To me (the shop’s location) is the most buzzing part of the city, still moving forward and changing, but still full of Bristolians. I love the fact it’s not far from Wapping Wharf either. It seems the buzz from there is spreading out.”

Hugo’s hopes to officially opens in February 2018 in the former Recreo shop between Corks and Earthcake, and before then will be selling Christmas trees from December 1 that are also locally grown.

Alongside the fresh organic and non-organic produce will be Little Hollows pasta made just 200 metres down the road on West Street.

As well as selling fresh produce, the shop will be putting on monthly evening demonstrations from local chefs and people passionate about food.

The crowdfunding hopes to raise £4,500 by the end of November to buy the opening stock for the shop and the coffee machine.

Rewards for pledges include your name on the ‘locals’ wall in the new shop, fruit and veg boxes, and free coffee for a year.
