Pub of the Week: The Fire Engine

By Ellie Pipe  Friday Nov 15, 2019

Beers are flowing, the dance floor is rocking and sixth birthday paraphernalia covers every available surface in The Fire Engine one recent Saturday night.

No, not a pint-sized partyer up way past their bedtime, but a celebration to mark the six years that the current landlady has been running the pub on the corner of Church Road and Blackswarth Road.

While a cluster of people take time out to sit with their drinks under the shadow of a giant ‘six’ helium balloon and listen to The Coyote Kings blasting out hit after popular hit, a small, dedicated group are happily letting their hair down on the dance floor.

As the band strike up the opening chords to a Fleetwood Mac favourite, one woman makes a beeline from the back of the pub, dragging a friend off her stool to join the dancing.

Meanwhile, an eager crowd waits their turn at the bar. “Sorry, we don’t have ginger beer,” apologies the woman behind the bar, scanning the shelves just in case. No matter, there’s a number of beers on tap and gin and tonic is served with ice and a slice.

The walls of the down-to-earth local are adorned with an eclectic collection of prints, from Banksy to Bob Marley, and a large canvas of Clifton Suspension Bridge hangs above the bar.

It’s a packed pub for this special Saturday sixth birthday celebration, but there’s plenty to draw a crowd most days of the week, with free jukebox nights, poker, karaoke, live music, sport screenings and more.

Right now, the band is starting up again. A man quietly sitting his pint in a corner smiles tolerantly as a couple rush by to join the dancing.
