Deco Lounge becomes first ever Bristol Lounge to close
Before Deco Lounge opened in June 2005, its license was fiercely opposed by a small group of local residents with it only being granted after an eight-hour court hearing.
Over the next 12 years, the bar became a Cotham Hill favourite especially with the local student population – which makes it even more surprising that it has now closed.
It is in fact the very first Bristol Lounge to close in the history of the rapidly expanding nationwide chain and only the second ever, after Cambio Lounge in Bishops Stortford in Hertfordshire.
is needed now More than ever
The Loungers group, which also owns includes the Cosy Club, began on North Street in 2002 and still has its headquarters and more bars in Bristol than any other town or city in the UK.
Deco Lounge opened in what was formally La Quintos restaurant on a road that now is a Bristol foodie hotspot.
But with its lease soon to run out, co-founder Alex Reilley said that “it’s the right time to close”.
He told the Bristol Post: “As a space, it no longer feels that relevant for us. It’s half the size of the minimum amount of space we’d look for in a new site.
“It’s a real shame as we had to fight really hard to open Deco back in 2005 and we’ve had a great 12 years but it’s the right time to close.
“Cotham Hill has got an increasingly exciting independent restaurant scene and it would be nice to see Deco replaced by one of the new emerging independents.”
