Young Chefs Gain Experience In Bristol Kitchens

By Bristol24/7  Monday May 20, 2019

Hart’s Bakery, Fosters Event Catering and Spike Island Cafe have all opened their kitchens to young people on our How To Be A Chef course this spring.

Charlotte, Dylan and Chloe are gaining work experience with the three Bristol businesses as part of the 12 week course in food and cooking taught by Square Food Foundation at their kitchen in Knowle West.

The course is part of our Better Bristol initiative, creating projects that have a positive impact on the lives of people in Bristol.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Charlotte, who is a carer for her brother, has already been offered paid work with Fosters Event catering after spending a day working with the team.

We caught up with the young chefs as they were learning the different tools chefs use to sharpen knives, and the tricks of the trade to get the best blade for chopping.

Charlotte – who loves all food and was planning on heading home to have a BBQ in the sun to celebrate – said: “I spent the day at Fosters preparing food for a big event. I served more than 100 deserts! It was hard work and really fun. I’m excited to go back.”

Meanwhile Chloe is looking forward to spending a second day supporting with food preparation at Spike Island, and Dylan has completed two days at Hart’s Bakery. They will then swap around so all of them will get an opportunity to work in each kitchen.

Charlotte has selected this week’s How To Be A Chef recipe of the week, Chelsea Buns.
