Greek restaurant to relocate

By Adam Postans  Tuesday Apr 8, 2025

A Greek restaurant is relocating just a few hundred metres from its original home.

Sousta will be opening within the vacant unit 9 on Lower Guinea Street next to Paco Tapas.

The family team behind Sousta promise “authentic Mediterranean food using the freshest ingredients”.

The Sousta team say: “Meal times are occasions for friends and family to meet, relax and gather together at the table sharing both good food and conversation.

“At Sousta we maintain this tradition, providing the very best food and hospitality.”

Sousta originally opened on Clarence Road and will be remaining in Redcliffe when it opens in the former General Hospital.

The original Sousta on Clarence Road was once the Mayor’s Arms pub. The former pub and restaurant has now been demolished with a “student-led mixed use scheme” due to built on the site overlooking the New Cut by Rengen Developments.

Councillors granted Sousta a premises licence to sell alcohol at their new site despite residents’ concerns about fire safety, noise and smells.

Owners wanted to serve alcohol until midnight from Friday to Sunday and 11pm Monday to Thursday; but councillors gave the restaurant an 11pm cut-off time seven days a week.

Councillors were told of “a significant fire risk” in the building that already has a fire watch because of cladding issues, but Avon Fire & Rescue Service had not raised an objection.

Another resident said noise and cooking smells from restaurants on the ground floor took away some pleasure from sitting out on the balcony of The General development,

Sousta owner Erika Tomasovicova said the new restaurant would be much smaller than other nearby restaurants so noise would not be an issue, and any live or recorded music would be played inside only.

She told councillors that the establishment would not have an open-fire grill, reducing the fire risk.
