Controversial ‘secret prison cocktail bar’ opening soon

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Jan 23, 2024

Guests at what is being billed as Bristol’s “ultimate immersive cocktail bar experience” have to bring their own spirits that they need to sneak in past a prison warden before spending a night in the cells.

Alcotraz is a “secret prison cocktail bar” with your drink turned into a number of different cocktails while you wear an orange jumpsuit.

Bristol is the latest opening for the bar which already has locations in Brighton, Cardiff, Liverpool, London and Manchester.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

The bar has previously been accused of being in poor taste and the latest in the “fetishisation of misfortune”.

A petition launched ahead of Alcotraz’s opening in Manchester accused the experience of “glamourising prison life” saying that the company behind the bar “want to make light of the deep inequalities and suffering that prisoners experience”.

“Beyond the booze, there is a rich and exciting experience as you become an integral part of one of our Alcotraz stories,” says the Alcotraz website.

“Be swept away in this immersive event as our first class actors, mind-blowing real jail cells and prison radio ensnare your senses and transport you into a night like no other.

“Become the inmate, the janitor or even the mole with one of our incredible stories – we can’t tell them without you!”

Located on All Saints’ Street in the city centre, a visit to Alcotraz costs from £36.50 to £58.50, depending on what experience is chosen.
