Bristol burger named best in the UK

By Martin Booth  Friday Apr 22, 2022

A burger on sale every weekend from a brewery in St Paul’s has been crowned the best in the UK, and could be the impetus its creator needs to open his first restaurant.

The Beef Chucky 2.0 from Danny’s Burgers features a 50-day dry aged beef blend, dry aged ex-dairy chuck roll, Kerrymaid American cheese, a beer cheese sauce, Kühne sliced dill pickles, mustard, candied jalapeños and fresh white onions, encased in a seeded brioche bun.

Danny’s Burgers founder Danny Hawke has form in the National Burger Awards, having won the national burger chef of the year in 2021.

“I didn’t see it coming at all,” Hawke said of this year’s victory for the Beef Chucky 2.0.

“It’s unbelievable. I’m a little bit scared about how busy this is going to make us now.

“After coming second last year, I wasn’t aware of how much of an impact the National Burger Awards could have, but off the back of that it was crazy, so no doubt this will be the same.

“I think this will even give me a push to open a restaurant.”

Based in Brislington, Danny’s Burger began in Fierce & Noble brewery in St Werburgh’s before moving to New Bristol Brewery on Wilson Street in St Paul’s.

Hawke’s winning burger saw off competition from 14 other creations to be named the UK’s best burger by a panel of industry judges.

The competition has been kind to Bristol in recent years, with Alex Hayes of Squeezed in Wapping Wharf winning burger chef of the year in 2019.
