Acclaimed chef to return to kitchen for special charity event
Bertha’s Pizza is welcoming a special guest at an event to raise money for charity.
Wilding Cider co-owner Sam Leach was previously head chef and co-owner of acclaimed Southville restaurant Birch, which he ran with his wife Beccy Massey after the pair had started out running supper clubs.
Sam will be joining the team at Bertha’s in Wapping Wharf on April 27 at a pay-what-you-can feast with chickens roasted in the pizza oven and all proceeds going to Blood Cancer UK.

The special Sunday lunch will be taking place on the same day as the London Marathon where Bertha’s co-owner Graham Faragher’s brother, Stuart, will be running to also raise money for Blood Cancer UK after his five-year-old daughter Amelie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.
“Hopefully this event will coincide with the end of Amelie’s treatment,” said Stuart, who is a doctor.
“As we cross our respective finish lines we aim to raise as much as we can for this life changing charity.”

Amelie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when she was aged just four and has since had two years of intensive treatment involving daily chemotherapy, surgical procedures and frequent admissions for infections; all the while supported by her big brother Joseph – photos: family
Graham called the event with Sam at Bertha’s “a good feed and a better deed”.
He said: “It’ll be very stripped back and relaxed, half a roast chicken for two to share served on a pizza dough trencher with wild garlic butter, roast potatoes and local greens.
“Pay what you can with all proceeds going to a worthy cause very close to my heart.”
