BFFs: Espresso martinis, Rag & Bone

By Martin Booth  Friday Jun 3, 2016

There aren’t many antique furniture shops that have queues stretching out of the door on a Friday night.

But the queues at Rag & Bone on St Nicholas Street aren’t for the wooden shelves, metal lockers or even the deer’s head on one wall (wonderful as all of these quirky items are) but for a cocktail.

The espresso martinis served here have swiftly become an integral part of a Bristol Night Market experience.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

With two pubs either side of them, co-owners Mollie Riach and Arthur Hodder didn’t want to poach any of their customers, so instead this deceptively strong cocktail is served – with a glass of prosecco the only other option.

“Espresso martinis are always so expensive if you go out for the night,” says Mollie as she prepares for Friday’s night market.

“We wanted to do them but quite cheap; we thought, ‘let’s get on it!’”

Espresso martinis here cost £5 with two shots of espresso from Clifton Coffee, two shots of vodka and one shot of Kahlua in each glass.

It’s a quite magnificent combination. Smooth, chocolatey, creamy and as sweet as honey. A decadent and delicious tipple.

“Actually, it’s not an exact science,” Mollie admits.

“We wanted to be part of the evening event. It’s really enjoyable pretending to be a bar person! All our mates come down, it’s quite a sociable thing, and instead of French polishing a cabinet I can make espresso martinis!”
