Review: Curtis Harding, Thekla – ‘The night was infused with the biggest serotonin boost’

By Ben Nicholls  Tuesday Mar 29, 2022

As the working week drew close to its end, excitement for the weekend and all its possibilities began to build. For one lucky group of people, about to head down with their dancing shoes on and a spring in their step to hear Curtis Harding.

After it was announced that the support act would not be performing due to illness, Harding had big boots to fill in an attempt to give the people what they wanted that night. But armed with a tambourine, some multi-coloured lighting and the obligatory sunglasses that were worn indoors; out came the soul-singing, joke-cracking headliner for the evening.

After releasing his latest body of work If Words Were Flowers back in the autumn of 2021, the fans were dying to hear these songs in the flesh and, boy, did the I Won’t Let You Down singer, not let us down. From the first song alone, the fans were busting out their biggest dance moves and this even had the band themselves dancing along.

After a fault early on in the set due to the bass amp not working properly, the band were back in action and the party was back on. With such a range of musical intricacies that night, from guitar solos, to soulful harmonies, to a saxophone solo that received the biggest ovation that could’ve quite literally rocked the boat, the night was infused with the biggest of serotonin boosts.

With an audience that were busting out dance moves left, right and center, hands held high in the air and singing the lyrics as loud as their vocal chords could go so that the heavens could hear, we all got comfortable and didn’t want the good vibes to stop that night.

As the lights went dark and the crowd left the venue after the band’s exit, you could hear the sweet and soulful tones throughout the people as they sang the ear worms of Curtis Harding that had clearly began to burrow their way into people’s minds.
