Mockingjay Madness
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was the UK’s fifth biggest box office earner of 2013, with a total haul of £32.5m. Little wonder the distributors decided to double their revenue by chopping the concluding episode in two, Twilight style. So – deep breath – The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 opens on Thursday 20 November. But if you’re the Hunger Games equivalent of a Twihard (a Hunger Gamer? A Hungie? A Katnisshead?) – or an unwilling partner of same being dragged kicking and screaming to your seat – you can see it earlier than that. You can also opt to revisit the earlier films, as cinemas compete to suck every penny from your wallet. Here’s our handy guide.
If you’re absolutely determined to be among the very first people in Bristol to see the film, the only place to do so is the Odeon. But there’s a catch, obviously. They’re showing Mockingjay (as we shall henceforth refer to it, for reasons of brevity) at the relatively civilised hour of 8pm on Wednesday 19 November. But the only way to get into this screening is to buy what they call a Superticket, which also entitles you to see a double bill of the first two films on Sunday 16. This will cost you £20.
Several cinemas are showing Mockingjay at just after midnight on Wednesday 19. But be warned that you won’t stagger out until well after 2am. You’ll find these screenings at both Vue cinemas (Longwell Green and Cribbs Causeway) and the Showcase Avonmeads. The Vue cinemas and Cineworld are also hosting epic Hungerthons of all three films from around 6pm on Wed 19, concluding with the first screening of the new one at midnight-ish.
If you want to catch up with the previous films on their own, the Vue cinemas are showing The Hunger Games on Sat 8 and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on Sat 15. The Showcase Avonmeads and Cinema De Lux cinemas are also showing both films separately on Wed 19.
In case you’re wondering, the Orpheus cinema doesn’t seem to be bothered with all that nonsense. Rather brilliantly, they won’t even be screening it until 5pm – nearly 24 hours after the impatient keenies have gorged on it.
