Laurel and Hardy hit the multiplexes
No excuse is necessary to celebrate the comic genius of Laurel and Hardy. But it’s the 125th anniversary of Stan Laurel’s birth. And, er, almost the 63rd anniversary of the duo’s one and only appearance on stage in Bristol at the Hippodrome on September 29, 1952.
That’s the peg on which the Laurel and Hardy tour of Showcase cinemas is being hung. This retraces Stan and Ollie’s 1952 tour, arriving at the Bristol Cinema De Lux on Thursday, June 11, with a double-bill of classics from the early 1930s.
In the great Sons of the Desert, arguably their finest feature, henpecked Stan and Ollie are honour-bound to slope off to their juvenile male lodge convention in Chicago. But Ollie’s wife puts a stop to that, so he feigns illness and arranges to have his doctor prescribe a rejuvenating trip to Honolulu with Stan. Alas, the ship on which they’re supposed to be travelling sinks, leaving the hapless duo with some explaining to do.
The supporting short is County Hospital. In this one, Ollie finds himself in hospital with a broken leg. When Stan comes to visit him, havoc inevitably ensues. Advance tickets for the screening are available here.
