Kim’s Video comes to the Cube

By Robin Askew  Wednesday Aug 23, 2023

Receiving its UK premiere at Frightfest in London over the August bank holiday weekend, Kim’s Video is a playful documentary about a legendary Manhattan video store. Run by Yongman Kim out of his dry-cleaning business, Kim’s Video eventually amassed 55,000 rare and esoteric titles. But after the bottom fell out of the rental market, he decided to give his collection away with the proviso that it remained intact and available to Kim’s Video members.

Eventually, the small Italian village of Salemi, Sicily, became home to the archive, in the hope of revitalising tourism. But after the initial publicity faded, so too did any sign of Kim’s tapes. Enter filmmaker David Redmon, who credits Kim’s Video for his film education, on a search for the legendary collection.

Co-directed with Ashley Sabin, Kim’s Video uses a variety of forms, from cine-essay and investigative nonfiction to experimental cinema and even heist movies to construct an ode to the love of cinema.
