Preview: VISIBLE screening + workshop

By Ed Barber  Thursday Aug 16, 2018

On Saturday, August 18th, filmmakers Kayza Rose and Campbell X will screen their new film VISIBLE at Arnolfini, starting at 5.30pm. The film highlights mainstream misconceptions and the sanitisation of LGBT+ issues, and explores and celebrates the complexity of LGBT+ and QTIPoC (queer, trans or intersex people of colour) histories.

The film will address these issues by intertwining compelling stories of contemporary artists, political activists, community leaders and various other inspirational figures.

This will be the inaugural screening of VISIBLE in Bristol, although the talented pair have been touring their work over the summer. Having already hosted screenings in Nottingham and Birmingham, a Manchester date will follow later in August.

Producer Kayza Rose is no stranger to social activism. She has an illustrious background as a former Arts Council Changemaker for Duckie (an independent arts collective), a leader of BlackOutLDN and the head of media for UK Black Pride.

In an interview with Bristol’s Rife Magazine alumni Antonia Odunlami, Rose said of her wider work: “Queer PoC and disabled PoC are some of the most vulnerable people, so I wanted to do things around entertainment but also about more serious issues like discrimination.

“If you find racism within the wider community, you’ll find it in the queer community too. [It’s about] having honest conversations and looking at ways in which we can realistically move forward.”

Her counterpart, director Campbell X, is equally experienced and has a back catalogue of projects that also address LGBT+ culture and the multiplicity of its stories. Their 2012 urban romantic comedy Stud Life, a film about LGBT life in East London, won an Independent Spirit Award at the Screen Nation Awards in 2013.

Following the screening of VISIBLE, the creative duo will host a workshop to discuss the purpose of their film and forge new connections and collaborations within Bristol’s LGBT+ and QTIPoC communities.

The night will be rounded off with performances by renowned non-binary artists ALOK and Travis Alabanza, organised by Bristol-based collective Thorny.

VISIBLE will be screened at 5.30pm at Arnolfini on Saturday, August 18. Find out more about the event at www.arnolfini.org.uk/whatson/film-workshop-visible and register for your free e-ticket at www.headfirstbristol.co.uk/#date=2018-08-18&event_id=47575
