Hoofers wanted for Singin’ in the Rain flash mob in central Bristol

By Robin Askew  Monday Sep 23, 2019

Fancy your hoofing skills? Reckon you can frolic amid the precipitation as well as Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds? Or at least as well as Eric and Ernie (joke for older readers)? Now’s your chance to prove it.

BFI musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen is an exhaustive new season running at cinemas across the UK from October to January. And yes, it does include a re-release of Singin’ in the Rain. To promote the season, the BFI and its local partners, including Compass Presents and Watershed, need to recruit dozens of local dancers for a flash mob video. This will take place at, or possibly in, the fountains on the centre on Saturday 12 October at 1pm.

Here’s what you need to do to take part. First, register at this Facebook page. Then learn these steps:

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Footage from the Bristol Umbrella Flash Mob will be used with clips from similar events in Cardiff and Manchester – all choreographed by Bristol’s Laura Kriefman  – to create a trailer that will be screened in cinemas nationwide to promote the BFI Musicals season.

Compass Presents is running a special immersive screening of Singin’ in the Rain at the Christmas Spiegeltent on December 18. Go here for further information.
