Foolhardy adventurers ahoy!
Keep your own palms and pants nice and dry by heading down to St. George’s on Nov 3/4 to watch other people risking life and limb for your entertainment. This year’s European Outdoor Film Tour comprises eight films.
Don’t Look Down
Twenty-three-year-old Brit James Kingston makes it his business to clamber up just about anything – cranes, bridges, skyscrapers, and so on. “Most people wet their pants when they look down,” he reasons, “but why shouldn’t I look down after taking the trouble of climbing up.” The amusingly named Mustang Wanted from Ukraine, himself one of the very first ‘roofers’ (not someone who fixes roofs, I’ll wager), is one of the few who share James’s peculiar hobby and issues him with a challenge.
The Frozen Titans
Helmcken Falls is unclimbable in summer. So rather than giving up, as most sensible folk would, ice-climber Will Gadd decides to tackle the rear wall of the 141-metre waterfall in winter, when the loose rock is frozen up by spray.
Brandon Semenuk’s Rad Company
Hard-boiled, mud-fighting mountain bikers run amuck in the woods and around scrapyards. The crazy scamps.
Dream
Professional kayaker Ben Marr conjures up a “fun water-sports spectacle”. Not that sort, you filthy bugger.
Cave Connection
Is there a link between the splendidly named cave systems of Nettlebed and Stormy Pot on the South Island of New Zealand? Kieran McKay and his team set out to find out by crawling around in them a thousand metres below the surface.
Shades of Winter – Pure
Billed as the only all-female ski movie in the history of the European Outdoor Film Tour.
Nobody’s River
Four women spend three months exploring the Amur River – a 5,000 kilometre journey that takes them from Easten Mongolia all the way to the Pacific.
El Sendero Luminoso
Meet Alex Honnold. He’s a leading practitioner of one of the daft..er, most dangerous sports in the world: free soloing. That’s climbing without a safety rope, kids. This film follows him as he tackles the El Sendero Luminoso route in Mexico: a 762-metre rock face of compacted lime.
